    Description

    Name
    :   Upero
crinus marinus + Agaricocrinus, Halysiocrinus, and Barycrinus
    Age:
    Mississippian
    Formation:
    Edwardsville Formation
    Location:
    Crawfordsville, Indiana
    Size:
Plate is almost 5 inches tall!
This is one crinoid fossil you will never see again. It is a spectacular multiple plate, with killer specimens of
Uperocrinus marinus, Agaricocrinus, Halysiocrinus, and Barycrinus preserved. This amazing slab is
from the legendary Mississippian Edwardsville Beds of Crawfordsville, Indiana.
    First, a
n excellent Agaricocrinus americanus is preserved at the top of the slab. This camerate crinoid has very stout biserial arms. The large crown is quite inflated and 3-D. On the middle-left of the plate is a beautiful Halysiocrinus nodosus, the ''nodding crinoid''. It is presumed that the stem of this crinoid was anchored to the sea bottom and ran parallel to the surface of the sea floor. The crinoid crown then ''nodded'' on the end of the stem just slightly above the sea floor. This large specimen is very well displayed on the plate. At the bottom of the slab is a very distinct Barycrinus hoveyi. This robust crinoid is quite inflated and well displayed -  the stout, branching, uniserial arms are easily seen, and the short ramules off the arms are very noticeable. This crinoid sort of resembles a chicken's foot!
Now for the key fossil on the plate. In the center, lying on top of the other crinoids, is a fantastic example of Uperocrinus marinus. This ultra-rare crinoid is famous for the ring of spikes branching out from the long anal tube! This textbook specimen has a great cup, excellent arms, a long stem, and... has the entire anal tube with spikes intact - WOW! The natural color and detail is just amazing - a specimen like this by itself is a major collection piece, but being on a one-of-a-kind multiple plate like this makes it the ultimate keeper specimen. This is simply a top quality, extremely collectible, and highly displayable crinoid fossil.
